We are currently undertaking works in the City of Wanneroo to cater for the developing north-east metropolitan suburbs. As part of these works we are upgrading the Carabooda - Neerabup Water Supply Scheme.
Stage One includes six kilometres of water pipeline and construction of a new 60 million litre storage reservoir (tank) on Carabooda hill.
The pipeline was completed in 2009, the route was chosen following technical investigation, flora and fauna surveys and consultation with the local community and City of Wanneroo.
Carabooda hill was chosen as the site of the new tank due to its similar elevation to the Neerabup Reservoir in the south. Major water storage in this location is ideal to maintain water pressures within the new scheme.
A storage tank was chosen over other options as it had less landscape and visual impacts. Following negotiations with the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC), a site landscaping plan was developed to offset the required pipe route and improve the tank site aesthetics.
The wind and soil condition at the top of the Carabooda hill do not support the use of tall vegetation to completely screen the tank, however landscaping efforts will focus on softening site aesthetics through a mix of native tree and bush species which have been approved by the DEC.
Stage One works at Carabooda are expected to be complete by mid 2012.
Stage Two of the works will involve a new pipeline to connect Eglington Groundwater treatment plant to the new Carabooda Tank. A second pipeline similar to Stage One, will also be needed. This work will only occur when demand requires and is expected to take place after 2015.
The proposed route for these pipelines has not been finalised. The tank site has the capacity for a second tank if demand, after 2025, drives the need for additional storage and water pressure.
Upgrading the Carabooda-Neerabup Water Supply Scheme will cater for our rapidly growing northern corridor.
The scheme covers 25 kilometres of Perth's northern coastal development strip between Kinross and the southern extent of Yanchep. The system includes the rapidly expanding suburbs of Clarkson, Merriwa, Ridgewood, Jindalee and Butler.
Water for the scheme comes from Whitfords and Quinns borefields and is treated at the Neerabup water treatment plant. Due to growing demands on the scheme, an additional reservoir (storage) is required in an elevated position to boost water pressure. This will be achieved through the new 60 million litre storage tank.
