Your Permit Conditions

You might think that your Permit conditions are just another set of rules you have to comply with. But there’s more to it than that. They can be valuable guidelines to help you manage your wastewater streams, and they provide a simple ‘recipe’ for ensuring that your wastewater handling is meeting all of your community and environment obligations.

Why Are They Needed?

We do need to impose conditions. It is important that we protect the proper operation of the municipal wastewater system, properly manage the contaminants transported and treated within the system, and properly control the quality of the treated wastewater that is ultimately discharged to the environment.

We also need to ensure that our treatment by-products can be safely disposed of, and ensure that opportunities for reuse of reclaimed water are not limited by residual contaminants.

Failures could result in environmental damage, threats to public health, increased demand for scarce water resources, or increased costs to you and the community – even if the failures appear minor or localised.

What Do They Cover?

The conditions associated with your Permit will specify which of your wastewater streams can be discharged to sewer. They will also specify what pre-treatment fixture is required (if any), and may specify the requirements for proper maintenance of this equipment. Other special conditions may also apply, depending upon your particular business operation and situation.

Do They Apply to Me?

The conditions associated with your Permit are determined during our technical assessment of your initial application for the Industrial Waste service.

The assessment is based upon specific information about your individual business (as provided by you with your initial application), and draws upon the expertise of our Wastewater Engineers and Industrial Waste Officers. This assessment will sometimes involve a physical inspection of your premises and business processes by our Industrial Waste Officers.

All of the conditions associated with your Permit are important and necessary, they are based on individual assessment, and are specifically tailored to your situation and needs. So none of them are superfluous or arbitrary, and all of the conditions on your permit do apply to you.

How Can They Help Me?

Our individually tailored permit conditions are excellent news for customers who are concerned about maintaining their positive public image, and fully satisfying their obligations to the community and the environment.

By using our Industrial Waste service and complying with these conditions, you can be assured that your wastewater discharged to sewer is being handled and disposed of in a safe and effective manner, without risk to the community or the environment.

Indeed, the systems and processes we employ under our Industrial Waste service fully satisfy the requirements of the Department of Environment, and the proportion of your waste streams discharged under this service will be fully compliant as a component of any approved Waste Management Plan you wish to develop for your site.
