Kununurra Diversion Dam maintenance works program

The Kununurra Diversion Dam allows water levels to be maintained in Lake Kununurra to enable water to be delivered via gravity to the majority of the irrigation area. Radial gates are used on the dam to control water discharge from the lake into the Lower Ord. The radial gates refurbishment program is critical for the ongoing operations of the irrigation scheme.

Project details

Works include dam wall repairs, repairs to gate hoist mechanisms and refurbishing of the upstream and downstream faces and arms of the gates. This work will continue in the coming dry seasons. There will be some disturbance to traffic during the works:

  • Vehicles crossing the bridge should expect delays during daylight hours as one lane will be closed to traffic for extended periods.
  • Traffic lights will be used during the day to allow regular flows of traffic in each direction.
  • Both lanes will be temporarily closed to traffic on occasion throughout the dry season; however traffic management will seek to minimise disruption and some work will be undertaken from a barge on Lake Kununurra to minimise traffic impact.
  • Vehicles intending to carry loads wider than 3.3 metres or taller than 4.5 metres across the bridge during daylight hours should contact the on site Project Supervisor Steve Dessent on 0407 029 342 or the Water Corporation call centre on 13 13 75 well in advance of arrival. These vehicles may only be able to cross the bridge at daybreak or sunset each day if prior notice is not given to the above contact numbers.
