Permanent Water Efficiency Measures

More Information about the Water Efficiency Measures

Save water. It's up to all of us.

Perth is experiencing its driest years since rainfall records commenced in 1876.  This has impacted on stream flows into our dams and the recharge of groundwater aquifers.

In 2001, two-day-a-week water restrictions for the Integrated Water Supply Scheme (IWSS) were put in place to assist the recovery process of the dams.

Since the introduction of the two-day-a-week sprinkler roster around 45 gigalitres (45 thousand million litres) are saved each year.  Given this success it was decided that watering rosters should become a permanent feature of scheme water management in Western Australia, and the use of groundwater from private bores should also become more water efficient to conserve our precious resource.

The new water efficiency measures include implementing a permanent watering day roster for scheme water users across Western Australia. The creation of two permanent state-wide watering roster zones – defined by one east-west boundary line on a map of Western Australia below Kalbarri and Kalgoorlie came into effect on 1 October 2007

The watering rosters were determined considering a number of factors including water saving potential, soil types and experience over several years. Garden experts agree that these measures will allow a waterwise garden to remain healthy all year round. Information on waterwise garden case studies in each region will be available to review from 1st December 2007 on the Water Corporation website.

All communities in Western Australia south from Kalbarri and Kalgoorlie are now subject to a two day per week watering roster.

The new measures also include the introduction of a three day a week watering roster for garden bores in the Perth Region (Perth and Mandurah).  The three day watering roster for garden bore owners works on the same roster as two day a week scheme water users, with an additional day.  The Department of Water’s statewide daytime sprinkler ban between 9am and 6pm for bore owners remains the same.

To find out your watering days, simply take the last digit of your house number and apply it to the Watering Roster for your area.

For example: If you live in Perth at 12 Rose Street, the last digit of your house number is 2.

If you live in Perth at Unit 3, 351-355 Rose Street, the last digit of your house number is 5.

The water efficiency measures also include state-wide daytime sprinkler ban compliance by all local government and government departments. The daytime sprinkler ban will reinforce the need of long term need water conservation.
