The Southern Sources Integration Assets (SSIA) project is a forward planning approach to identify potential suitable corridors of land throughout south metropolitan suburbs of Perth - within the City of Rockingham, City of Armadale and the Shire of Serpentine-Jarrahdale - and secure them for future installation of water services and associated infrastructure.
This project was referred to the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) in August 2006, requesting that the project be assessed via a Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) Level of Assessment (LOA), the first of its nature for the Water Corporation. No public appeals were received on the SSIA LOA.
In June 2007 the Environmental Scoping Document (ESD) was released for public comment. The public comments received from the ESD phase have been incorporated into the draft SEA which is currently under assessment by the EPA.
This draft SEA document incorporates the identification and investigation of environmental issues relevant to the potential corridors, incorporating key issues identified by the EPA, and provides management measures to ensure that the proposed corridors are environmentally acceptable.
Eleven potential corridors have been identified for the purposes of the SEA. Not all of these corridors will be utilised, depending upon technical, environmental and/or social constraints identified through the SEA process.
By identifying and securing potential corridors at this early stage, including identification in the Metropolitan Regional Scheme, planning for infrastructure, up to 2050, can be undertaken with a greater certainty in the knowledge that pipe routes are available.
Following formal advice from the EPA the draft SEA has been released for public comment for a ten (10) week period from 12 October 2009 – 21 December 2009.
To help you learn more about this proposal, the Water Corporation is hosting two open information sessions during the public comment period for you to discuss the proposal one-on-one with members of the project team.
