Water recycling for residential use (dual reticulation)

Dual reticulation schemes in Australia

Dual reticulation is where two separate pipes deliver water of different qualities into  homes, commercial premises or industries - one pipe carries drinking water supply and the other carries non-drinking water. This may be recycled water or other alternative water sources such as groundwater (as in the case of Brighton, a northern suburb of Perth).

The non-drinking water can be used for toilet flushing, watering lawns and gardens, clothes washing or car washing.

Although recycled water for dual reticulation is treated to a very high quality, it is not suitable for drinking or filling swimming pools. Many systems are put in place to ensure that nobody accidently drinks water from the non-drinking water supplies.  All pipework and plumbing carrying recycled water is coloured purple and labelled so that this risk is minimised.

Several dual reticulation schemes exist in Australia as shown on the map (right).

The Water Corporation is investigating the potential for dual reticulation schemes.
