An upright shrub to as much as 6 m but usually less. Broad lightly toothed deep green leaves clasp the woody stems which are topped with scarlet, bird attractant flowers in winter and spring. Difficult to flower in cultivation but worth the effort. Flower colour variations include pale red and orange.
