Target 60 this summer

Right now, everyone in Perth is being asked to take 60 litres - or around 10% - off their daily water use. That's because every litre we save now is a litre banked for the future, and will reduce the amount we need from our underground water sources and dams.

Commit to saving 60 litres of water a day this summer - create your personalised action plan and follow the 10 simple tips to help you save water in and around your home.

For each tip that you commit to, you’ll be able to save more water. Invite friends to target 60, and you could win prizes. The more people you get to target 60, the more chance you have of winning the grand prize.

In addition, to help you target 60 this summer we have put together some handy summer water-saving tips here.

Only water your garden once a day

  • Only water once on your rostered watering day, either before 9am or after 6pm.
  • Over watering is actually a waste. Lots of plants in your garden, particularly natives, are much tougher than you think and may need no additional watering once established.
  • Watering in the morning is generally best, since the water is available to the plants throughout the day when they need it most.
  • For pop-up sprinklers, try to keep to ten minutes a station.

Replace worn nozzles and broken sprinklers

  • Replace worn nozzles and broken seals to make sure you are not wasting water - water the garden and not the road.
  • Not sure what a worn nozzle or broken seal looks like? Contact a Waterwise Garden Irrigator or Waterwise Irrigation Design Shop for specialist advice on making your irrigation system more waterwise.

Apply 5 - 10cm of mulch to your garden

  • A good waterwise mulch can significantly reduce evaporation, help to protect your soil, and reduce weeds and plant stress.
  • A good waterwise mulch should have large, chunky particles - look for products displaying the Waterwise Approved and Smart Approved WaterMark symbols.

Improve your soil

  • Applying a soil improver will increase your garden's drought resistance - the healthier the soil, the more drought resistant your plants will be.
  • Those based on organic matter are best - animal manures, worm farm residue, bagged soil improvers and soil conditioners are all good sources of organic matter.
