120 year old water main to be replaced on William Street Northbridge
Water Corporation will replace a 120 year old water main on William Street in Northbridge to ensure water can continue to be reliably supplied to the area for decades to come.
This essential work is part of the Pipes for Perth program, and will be carried out in short stages, starting 19 August, along William Street, between Newcastle Street and James Street.
Work will then continue south on William Street between James Street and Roe Street, finishing by the middle of October.
Water Corporation spokesperson Clare Lugar said the work would be completed in two separate stages to help reduce the impact on the area. Work had been timed to ensure it was finished before the summer trading period.
“Our ongoing commitment includes working closely with William Street businesses, the City of Perth and other members of the community to ensure we’re reducing the impact on the street as much as possible,” Ms Lugar said.
“While this work is essential, we understand there will be some impacts on street life so we encourage people to still head to their favourite venues on William Street.
“There will be traffic detours during the work with northbound lanes of William Street being closed for the project, but we will ensure pedestrians have good footpath access to local businesses at all times.”
Ms Lugar said some water mains in Perth had been supplying water to homes and businesses for over a century, and like anything that age, eventually needed to be replaced.
Since 2016, Water Corporation’s Pipes for Perth program has replaced more than 200 kilometres of water mains across Perth.
Water Corporation has established support processes in place if a business experiences any financial loss as a result of the work.
