Project goal:

To fix a fault with the digesters.

Status:

In planning

Delivery Date:

What's happening?

There are currently a number of technical issues within the plant’s digester process which are resulting in intermittent odours.

After thorough investigation we have found odours to be the result of separate technical issues including failure of the biogas storage facility in late 2019, and more recently the issues with waste gas burners and blower systems.

We would like to reassure the community that these odours pose no risk to community health and safety, however, we acknowledge they may at times be unpleasant.

When will the issue be resolved?

The waste gas burner system is now back online, which has significantly reduced the intermittent odours from the plant. We expect the blower system to be operational at the beginning of June 2020, further improving our ability to effectively control odours.

COVID-19 restrictions mean we are unable to source the specialised part required to fix the biogas storage facility from Spain. We continue to monitor the situation and our priority is to have the biogas facility repaired as soon as it is safe to do so.

Again, we would like to again thank the community for your patience and understanding.

Odours from the plant should have reduced significantly, however we ask that you continue to report odours to our 24-hour Faults, Emergencies and Security line on 13 13 75 so reports can be appropriately followed up.

Update – May 2020

Thank you for your patience while we continue to carry out repairs to minimise odour from the plant. Repairs are progressing well, with the waste gas burner system back online this week, which has significantly reduce odour from the plant.

Work to repair the blower system is underway and is on schedule to be completed around the start of June 2020.

Update – April 2020

After thorough investigation we have found odours to be the result of separate technical issues within the plant’s digester process. In addition to repairing the biogas storage facility, we have also identified issues with the waste gas burners and blower systems in recent weeks.

These systems help prevent the release of intermittent odours produced during the wastewater treatment process. While they are not functioning correctly, small amounts of odorous gas may occasionally be released.

We would like to reassure the community that these odours pose no risk to community health and safety, however, we acknowledge they may at times be unpleasant.

The waste gas burner will be fixed locally within two weeks, allowing us to significantly reduce and manage any potential intermittent odours. We expect the blower system to be operational within six weeks, further improving our ability to effectively control odours.

As previously communicated, to fix the biogas storage facility we require a highly-specialised part that is designed and built in Spain. This part was ordered in December and was scheduled to arrive in March, however, the equipment and the technician needed to install it are unable to enter Western Australia due to COVID-19 travel restrictions.

We understand that this process has taken longer than expected and we apologise and thank residents for their understanding at this time.

We continue to ask the community to report odours via our 24-hour Faults, Emergencies and Security line on 13 13 75 so reports can be appropriately followed up.

Update – March 2020

We are in the process of obtaining the new equipment required to resolve the fault in the digesters at the plant. This equipment has been purchased and is set to arrive on site in the coming weeks. Unfortunately, due to the travel restrictions currently in place, the specialised technicians required to install the new equipment are not able to travel to Australia.

Whilst we are endeavouring to find local alternatives, at this stage we are looking at lengthy delays in getting the digesters back to full working capacity. We apologise for any discomfort these intermittent odours may cause and thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Project update – December 2019

We have ordered the equipment required to repair the odour control system. The equipment has been ordered from overseas and is scheduled to arrive on site in early 2020. Once arrived, it will take around one month to install, with all issues set to be resolved by April 2020.
