Leak detection dog visits Landsdale Primary School
Water Corporation’s leak detection dog Kep, has been trained to use her extraordinary sense of smell to detect leaks in underground water mains so they can be repaired.
Over the past eight months alone, she has covered around 190 kilometres across the Wheatbelt and found 25 water leaks, helping to save our precious drinking water.
Landsdale Primary School received a visit today from Kep - named after the Noongar word for water – after the school won Water Corporation’s Seek a Leak competition.
Landsdale Primary school teacher Louise Seeley said their Year 2 class set out working in teams to investigate the school's water sources and record and report back any leaks using a leak-finding colouring game worksheet.
“The Seek a Leak activity was a great way to engage the students on where to look for leaks around their own house,” Ms Seeley said.
“After receiving a visit from Water Corporation, we heard about the great opportunity to get the kids involved in leak detection and win a visit from Kep. It was all too good to pass up.”
As part of Kep’s visit to the school, the springer spaniel and handler Andrew Blair demonstrated to students how she keeps her leak detection skills sharp when she’s not working.
Water Corporation General Manager Customer and Community, Karen Willis, congratulated the students on winning the Seek a Leak competition.
“Arranging Kep to visit students provides a unique opportunity to introduce the Waterwise Schools Program to the school community,” Mrs Willis said.
The Program supports the Department of Education Curriculum across all major learning areas, by integrating STEM skills. The aim is to educate young people about water and provide them with lifelong tools to use water wisely.
A total of 580 WA schools have become waterwise since Water Corporation launched this award winning program in 1995.
