Waterwise Aquatic Centre Program

Find out how you can join this free program and expand your fresh water thinking.

Together with the Leisure Institute of WA Aquatics (LIWA), we’ve developed this program specific to aquatic centres, to recognise their commitment to saving water.

Congratulations to Broome Recreation and Aquatic Centre for making the commitment to reduce their water use and their global footprint - Broome Recreation and Aquatic Centre has recently come on board in the Waterwise Aquatic Centre Program - welcome to the program!

We recently recognised 6 new Waterwise Aquatic Centres at the LIWA Aquatics 49th State Conference. A shout out goes to Onslow Aquatic Centre, Margaret River Recreation Centre, Bridgetown Leisure Centre, Quairading Memorial Swimming Pool, Waroona Recreation and Aquatic Centre and Williams Swimming Pool for their commitment to using water wisely in their centres! Congratulations to all these centres!

To become a Waterwise Aquatic Centre, all you need to get started is a Water Corporation account number (found on your bills), to be a current LIWA member and meet the following criteria:

  1. Sign a commitment letter to participate in our program
  2. Review the water use history at your centre and complete a water management plan
  3. Complete an annual report to provide feedback on your centres' progress

The key factors of a water management plan that need to be demonstrated to achieve waterwise endorsement are:

  • Read meters (and any sub-meters) on a daily basis and record water use to identify anomalies
  • Include leak detection as part of the daily meter reading inspections and report and repair these issues when observed
  • Display water saving materials such as posters and stickers around your centre to promote waterwise behaviours
  • Reduce showerhead flow rates to a minimum of 9L/minute or less
  • Reduce hand basin tap flow rates to 4.5L/minute or less
  • Ensure cleaners use a broom or a mop to clean floors in change-rooms
  • Complete backwashing based on pressure rather than timed backwashing
  • Ensure irrigation is compliant with watering rosters.

As a program participant, you'll receive the following benefits:

  • Exclusive access to our waterwise logo to promote yourself as a waterwise centre
  • Free online Waterwise training for the team at your centre
  • Access to data logging services on your meter to assist with water management and leak detection
  • Waterwise resources such as signage, stickers, posters to help you promote waterwise behaviours within your centre and community
  • Invitations to workshops, networking and industry events
  • Opportunities to show case your water saving initiatives through case studies on our website.
