Pre-Primary–Year 2

This interactive incursion uses a wetland scene to teach students about the effects of stormwater pollution on the local environment. They watch the wetland habitat and wildlife ‘disappear’ as pollutants enter it via stormwater drains. As they learn how to prevent the pollutions from entering the stormwater systems, they help to revive the wetland and watch the wildlife return.

  • Session length – 45 minutes
  • Maximum number of students – 30

Learning objectives

  • Know what stormwater is and where it goes.
  • Identify simple ways to help protect our stormwater systems.

Optional lessons and activities to conduct pre-incursion

Year 3–6

Students will participate in an interactive game to develop their understanding of the different types of stormwater pollutants, how they enter the stormwater system, their effect on the environment and what actions can be taken to prevent them. They use this knowledge to help create ‘polluted stormwater’ and discuss in more detail problems associated with particular pollutants and how they can help protect our environment against the effects of stormwater pollution.

  • Session length – 1 hour
  • Maximum number of students – 60

Learning objectives

  • Explain what stormwater is and its impact on the environment.
  • Develop an understanding of the impacts of pollutants and how they enter our stormwater systems.
  • Identify simple ways to assist their household in reducing the pollutants that enter stormwater systems.

Optional lesson plans and activities to conduct pre-incursion

Optional lesson plans and activities to conduct post-incursion

During this lecture style incursion, students will learn how stormwater runoff becomes polluted as well as the effects of litter, pollutants and specific contaminants on the local ecosystem. They will learn about alternative products they can use and simple behaviour changes to help prevent stormwater pollution.

  • Session length – 1 hour
  • Maximum number of students – unlimited

Learning objectives

  • Understand the effects of stormwater on the environment and ecosystem.
  • Develop an understanding of the impacts of stormwater pollutants and how they challenge sustainability.
  • Be aware of personal and social responsibilities for maintaining stormwater systems.
