Fast-growing, deciduous, upright branching shrub to as much as 4 metres high and 3 metres wide but usually kept smaller and shaped by regular pruning. Dense foliage and large flowers in spring and summer. Flowers may be single or double and in various shades of white, pink, or mauve, usually with strong markings in the throat.

Cultivars include 'Ardens' (mauve-purple flowers), 'Double Pink', and 'Single Blue'.
