We're continuing to work closely with our communities and stakeholders to deliver a reliable water supply and support future growth in the region.
Our plans to secure drinking water supplies
Water supply solutions for the Mid West are adapted to suit regional demand and future population growth.
Plans are in place to expand the borefield that supplies Geraldton and surrounding areas to continue addressing industry and community needs as necessary. Groundwater sources that supply Exmouth and Carnarvon will be expanded to secure more resilient supplies and support growth. Alternative options for ensuring the continuity of critical power supply to borefields in both towns are also included.
The desalination treatment plant in Coral Bay was recently upgraded to accommodate increase in demand during peak tourist season. Water efficiency and tourism expansion are driving future water supply plans for Coral Bay.
Improving our wastewater services
Upgrades of infiltration ponds at one of Geraldton’s wastewater treatment plants are underway to increase reliable plant operation and provide recycling opportunities.
Reducing water use
We are working with communities in Dongara, Geraldton and Exmouth to change water use behaviours through our Waterwise Program delivered to stakeholders, schools and local government associations. This includes retrofitting inefficient appliances for residential and non-residential customers, and leak repairs.
A tailored project underway in Cue to reduce overall consumption by 10% over 2 years to extend scheme capacity and contribute to a deferral of new source development. Pressure management programs will also roll out to regional areas throughout the Mid West to deliver additional water savings in the near future.
Increasing water recycling
Approximately 32% of all treated wastewater in the Mid West region is recycled. All of the treated wastewater from the Exmouth, Carnarvon, Kalbarri and Dongara is supplied to parks, gardens and ovals.
Further opportunities for increasing re-use of treated wastewater exist in the Narngulu area. Investment in conveyancing infrastructure and demand from industry is vital to progress these opportunities.
