Outdoors is where most homes use the greatest amount of water. These simple do’s and don’ts can help you care for your garden while saving bucketloads across your home.
Things you can do outdoors
Test your irrigation
A quick check can stop small leaks from wasting bucketloads. You can test your irrigation for up to 2 minutes on your rostered watering days before 9am or after 6pm. Test after blackouts, repairs or new installations to make sure everything is working efficiently.
Use a tap timer or trigger nozzle
Timers and trigger nozzles help control flow and avoid leaving water running. Be sure to check hoses and fittings for leaks.
Hand water your garden
Hand watering is allowed any day, ideally before 9am. Use a watering can or a handheld hose with one outlet to target thirsty plants without overwatering.
Wash your car on the lawn
Fill a bucket before washing your car and park on the lawn. This helps your lawn soak up the water instead of letting it run off onto the road.
Top up your pool wisely
Pool evaporation adds up fast over summer. A cover helps save bucketloads. When topping up your pool, set a phone timer to avoid overflow. We recommend using a pool or spa cover to reduce water loss through evaporation.

Things to avoid outdoors
Only water your lawn and garden once on your rostered watering days
Only use the water you need outside by sticking to your rostered watering days. Watering just one extra day a week can waste 87 buckets of water. That's 348 buckets a month!
Leaving hoses running
Never leave a hose unattended. This is one of the quickest ways to waste bucketloads of water outdoors.
Using water slides outside watering days
Slides and water play items that need a hose can only be used on your watering days.
Hosing hard surfaces
- Do not hose driveways or paving for general cleaning
- You can only use the minimum amount of water needed for cleaning for health and safety reasons using a hand held hose
High pressure cleaners and pressure washers
- Do not use high pressure cleaners or pressure washers for general cleaning
- You can only use the minimum amount of water needed for cleaning for health and safety reasons using a high pressure cleaner or pressure washer.
- High pressure cleaners are more efficient when cleaning is essential, using 6-7L/min compared to 25L/min from a standard hose
