Any organisation, small or large, can help shape waterwise communities by being water efficient. Together with the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation, we’re thrilled to announce the 2025 Waterwise Recognition Award winners. 

These awards celebrate the outstanding waterwise efficiency achievements of local governments, businesses and developers across our non-residential waterwise programs.

Platinum award winner 

The 2025 Waterwise Platinum Business of the Year has proudly been awarded to Karratha Airport.

It’s not an easy accomplishment to be awarded Waterwise Platinum Business of the year. But we think you’ll agree that Karratha Airport are well and truly deserving of the title, after their waterwise efforts resulted in an outstanding 50.2% reduction in scheme water use!

Crowning waterwise achievements 

Crown Metropol Perth - Pool 

Crown Metropol Perth embraced water efficiency by installing fixtures and fittings with a minimum 3-star WELS water efficiency rating, and retrofitting most hand basin taps with aerators/restrictors to reduce water flow. The hotel significantly reduced water consumption in back-of-house areas by replacing single flush toilets with dual flush models.

The hotel implemented sub-metering in all operational areas, including kitchens and pools. Pool water consumption readings are taken weekly, and any abnormalities are promptly investigated.

Landing waterwise goals at the Landing Resort

The Landing Resort

At the Landing Resort, a system has been implemented to monitor water consumption on a per-guest basis, providing more useful data and allowing for fluctuations in guest numbers. QSD Hire has ensured that all new installations, including shower heads, toilets, tap fittings and hot water systems, meet  the minimum water efficiency ratings. The resort installed electronic timers to ensure precise water usage for green spaces. 

Housekeepers are trained to look for leaks in toilet bowls, bathroom taps and shower heads. Senior cleaners conduct arrival checks on rooms and report any issues electronically in real-time via the maintenance system.

Real-time leak detection at BOC Australia 

BOC Australia

Located in Kwinana Beach, Western Australia, BOC Gases has set a high standard in commitment to water efficiency through systematic upgrades and proactive water management practices. Water usage at the site is monitored through the main supply Water Corporation meter and individual plant process supply water flow meters to the cooling towers. These metres allow for real-time tracking of water consumption, with data being reviewed daily to detect unusual water consumption and identify leaks. BOC Gases have also installed dual flush toilets in all restrooms to further enhance water efficiency.

Platinum award winner 

This year, Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre (MARC) has been awarded the platinum Waterwise Aquatic Centre award.

MARC received this recognition by implementing a number of water saving features during redevelopment, while also taking a proactive approach to facility maintenance, staff training and educating patrons.  MARC’s team is committed to water conservation, educating patrons and staff about the vital role they play in saving water.

No more leaks at Swan Active Ballajura 

Swan Active Ballajura

At Swan Active Ballajura, water meter readings and leak detection inspections are both completed daily. This vigilance ensures water consumption is monitored closely so any leaks are detected early and can be promptly repaired. 

The aquatic centre has installed water efficient shower heads across the facility and upgraded exiting single flush toilets to dual flush models. Swan Active Ballajura also provides a range of waterwise resources for patrons to increase their knowledge on the importance of saving water.

Boyup Brook Swimming Pool makes a splash 

Boyup Brook Swimming Pool

A new face to the Waterwise Program, Boyup Brook Swimming Pool received endorsed recognition by implementing a number of water saving measures at the facility, which includes utilising data loggers to identify and repair leaks quickly. The aquatic centre uses waterwise shower heads and basin fixtures to reduce water flow rates, have installed duel flush toilets across the facility and installed waterwise signage to educate patrons.

Gold recognition 

Water management is serious business at The Quadrant 

1 William St Perth

1 William Street, Perth (The Quadrant) have established a dedicated water management team. The team has incorporated new stormwater management processes into building operations, planted waterwise gardens and installed waterwise irrigation in garden beds. The Quadrant also implemented a water efficient purchasing policy that includes instillation of water-efficient fixtures, digital water metering and data logging to improve water consumption monitoring and leak detection. 

Water conservation in the heart of Perth CBD 

Building management at 240 St Georges Terrace, Perth (Dexus Funds Management LTD) have provided waterwise educational materials and resources in bathrooms and communal areas, and installed water efficient fixtures with minimum WELS 4-star rating. They have also implemented regular meter readings, sub-meters and a Building Management System with leak detection. The building has installed waterwise gardens, waterwise irrigation and are managing stormwater onsite.

Welcoming Orchard House to the Waterwise Business Program 

Orchard House

151 Jull St, Armadale (Orchard House) joins as a newly endorsed waterwise building in 2025. Orchard staff completed Waterwise Efficiency training to provide best-practice end of trip facilities and enable active commuting. Orchard House has achieved a 5-star NABERS Water Rating.

Gold recognition 

Developing a waterwise community at Orion Industrial Park 

Orion Industrial Park

Orion Industrial Park (DevelopmentWA) is an industrial estate built on a former quarry, that spans over 98 hectares. All tenancies in this estate will incorporate waterwise landscape design, and mandatory installation of rainwater tanks to provide water for toilets and irrigation. 

There is a sustainable vision and shared responsibility approach with the development of Urban Water Management Strategies and Plans and shared ownership and management of water assets, such as community bores and recycling systems.

Community consultation shapes water efficient development at Hesperia

Hesperia Hazelmere

At Hazelmere Interchange (Hesperia), community consultation has shaped a development that truly puts water efficiency at the forefront. Public feedback helped develop a Wetland Management Plan aimed at protecting the ecological value of nearby wetlands. With all taps, urinals, toilets, showers and dishwashers meeting the minimum WELS ratings. The development features extensive water metering and monitoring at every warehouse and automatic garden irrigation systems - all guided by a comprehensive Sustainability Strategy.

Development that rewards waterwise behaviour at Catalina Green

Catalina Green Sustainable Home

Catalina Green (Catalina Regional Council) embraces water conservation through its waterwise landscape design and rebate initiatives for lot purchasers installing WELS-rated appliances and landscaping packages. This is further enhanced by forward-thinking Urban Water Management Strategies, sustainable display homes with grey water systems and Greenlink projects set a good example for residents, resulting in more liveable and waterwise communities.

The City of Perth has been awarded 2025 Waterwise Platinum Council of the year, in recognition of their commitment to sustainable water management, securing water supplies and enhancing green spaces for future generations. Through efficient irrigation, stormwater harvesting and community engagement, the City is making a real impact on climate resilience.

Armadale's waterwise plan in action

The City of Armadale have increased their efforts by implementing a new series of initiatives through their latest Waterwise Action Plan.  At the heart of this success is strong leadership displayed through high-quality community engagement on sustainable practices, most notably the expansion of the City's Habitat Links program.

The City of Nedlands is planning with water conservation in mind 

The City of Nedlands was awarded Gold Status after implementing a variety of innovative initiatives, including enhancing their environmental strategy and local planning policies, forming a Water Management Team and identifying water efficiencies at the HBF Stadium.

The Shire of Capel is educating residents and council staff

Over the last year, the Shire of Capel has achieved Gold Status by implementing targeted initiatives with tangible impacts. These include creating a waterwise verge booklet to help locals create efficient green spaces, forming a collaborative Water Management Team and assisting Parks and Irrigation workers in completing Irrigation Australia's Irrigation Efficiency Course.

Fresh waterwise commitment for The Shire of Ashburton

This year, the Shire of Ashburton received endorsed status after launching a new Waterwise Action Plan. Key upgrades include converting all public taps to water-efficient models and installing advanced underground irrigation systems. This displays a clear commitment to long-term water management.

Waterwise individual award

The Waterwise Individual Award recognises local government staff who implement innovative water efficiency solutions within their councils. This year, we received six exceptional nominations:

Congratulations to all the winners for their incredible contributions to water efficiency and sustainability. Your efforts are vital in building a more waterwise and resilient Western Australia.

Rebecca Thomas (City of Stirling)

Rebecca was nominated for transforming the City's approach to water conservation and driving a significant cultural shift. Her leadership has led to a new groundwater conservation strategy, securing $600,000 in Waterwise funding and the implementation of innovative projects. Rebecca's work on several projects, including the Constance Nanson Waterwise Park trial and the creation of engaging resources has educated the community and demonstrated the value of waterwise measures. Her efforts have resulted in the conversion of nearly 19,000 square meters of verges to native waterwise gardens and the removal of 9,700 square meters of turf, showcasing her profound impact on the City of Stirling and its community.

Martyn Glover (City of Gosnells)

With over 40 years in public works engineering, Martyn is a recognised leader in sustainability and climate resilience, contributing significantly to industry guidelines and sharing his expertise through various professional roles. Martyn's leadership in the Waterwise Councils Program led to the City of Gosnells achieving Waterwise Council endorsement in 2021 and Gold recognition in 2023.  His work on the Robinson Park redevelopment and the Smart Drainage Program has set industry standards in stormwater management, earning national and WA awards.
