Water Corporation is set to open the Wilson Inlet sandbar, following discussions with the Department of Water and the Shire of Denmark last week.

Acting Great Southern Regional Manager Stuart Dyson said the inlet was close to reaching a water level where the sandbar could be safely opened under the protocol put in place in 2008.

“As water levels have risen in the last few days, we are closer to reaching a trigger point to activate opening the inlet,” Mr Dyson said.

“We estimate that the opening may occur next week with the exact date to be determined shortly.”

Mr Dyson reminded onlookers and surfers to take care during this event.

“As the opening of the sandbar always attracts plenty of onlookers, we urge people to remain behind control barriers we will set up on Ocean Beach while we carry out this work,” Mr Dyson said.

“We also want to remind surfers the ocean near the area of the opening could be more dangerous than usual at this time.”
