Water Corporation has reminded Walpole residents and visitors to be waterwise with their water use this coming Australia Day long weekend.

Water Corporation Great Southern Regional Manager, Andrew Kneebone, said it was important to be waterwise with a large influx of visitors expected and warm temperatures in the high 20s forecast.

"Walpole is a fantastic place to spend time over the summer, but it is important for locals and visitors to be mindful of their water use,” Mr Kneebone said.

“Walpole received lower than average annual rainfall this year, which has resulted in the local drinking water supply dam being at a lower level than usual. The dam is at 80 per cent capacity, which is 15 per cent less than the same time last year.

“Over the Christmas and New Year holidays, we supplemented the dam with water from two local bores, which are typically not needed until later in the year.

“While the community shouldn’t be alarmed, it is important everyone continues to make the effort to save water as the climate continues to dry.”

Water Corporation is encouraging the community to use water wisely by:

  • Taking shorter showers. Reducing shower times by two minutes will result in significant savings.
  • Switch off your sprinkler systems for the long weekend, or reduce your system run times by two minutes per station.
  • Stick to the two-day-per-week sprinkler roster which applies to Walpole and only water once on your rostered day before 9am or after 6pm.

Mr Kneebone said reducing water use was a key component to help secure future water supplies.
