• Denmark to receive $15 million water recycling scheme
  • Scheme will reduce Denmark's reliance on surface and groundwater

The State Government today announced Denmark will soon have a $15 million water recycling scheme to irrigate the local golf course and a new tree farm, made possible by Royalties for Regions.

Water Minister Mia Davies and Regional Development Minister Terry Redman said the Denmark water recycling scheme would recycle treated wastewater from the Water Corporation's Denmark Wastewater Treatment Plant through a new pipeline for use in irrigation.

"Using recycled water to irrigate the Denmark golf course and a new tree farm will reduce the town's reliance on surface and groundwater, which is especially important considering low rainfall levels in recent years," Ms Davies said.

"The Denmark tree farm will provide a sustainable enterprise for the region and it is anticipated there will be opportunities for other users in Denmark in the future."

Mr Redman said the recycling scheme would deliver a wide range of economic and environmental benefits for the people of Denmark and the Great Southern region.

"The Denmark golf course is a significant focal point for sporting and social activity in the region and this scheme will provide a climate resilient, secure water resource for this well-used facility," he said.

"I am pleased to see Royalties for Regions continuing to support a better quality of life in regional WA enabling regions to grow and contribute to strong economies."

Ms Davies and Mr Redman both thanked the Denmark community for their valuable input, which had helped bring the water recycling scheme into reality.  Subject to approvals, the recycling scheme is expected to be operational by the first half of 2018.
