Water Corporation has warned people not to swim or beach fish between Bent Street Jetty and View Road on Safety Bay Road as a wastewater overflow has occurred in the area.

Wastewater has overflowed upstream of the Charthouse Road Wastewater Pump Station to a drain, which discharges at the corner of Malibu Road and Safety Bay Road.

Early estimates indicate that about 3.4 million litres (equivalent to about 1.5 Olympic swimming pools) of wastewater has overflowed from the drain to the beach and ocean.

Warning signs have been erected on the beach 500 metres north and south of where the overflow occurred.

Tidal currents, wave motion and ocean swells will ensure that the wastewater disperses quickly.

Water Corporation was notified of the issue by the City of Rockingham this afternoon and crews responded immediately.

The cause of the overflow is still being investigated.

Water Corporation apologises for any inconvenience this overflow may cause.

A further statement will be issued to advise when the water is safe for swimming and beach fishing is again permitted.
