Project to replace century old water mains along Cambridge Street
Water Corporation will start work along Cambridge Street in mid-April to replace about 2.6 kilometres of original water mains first installed more than 100 years ago.
Water Corporation spokesperson Clare Lugar said work would be carried out in stages to minimise disruption.
“Work will begin at the intersection of Brookdale Street in Floreat and be carried out in sections towards Harborne Street in Wembley,” Ms Lugar said.
“The southern lane of Cambridge Street will be affected by the work, with traffic management in place for the safety of workers, road users and pedestrians.
“The entire 2.6 kilometres section of water main is expected to be replaced by August 2017.”
Ms Lugar said the replacement of the water mains reduced the likelihood of breaks and would provide a reliable water supply to local residents for decades to come.
“We will continue to work closely with businesses and local residents to minimise disruption over the coming months,” Ms Lugar said.
“We thank the community and road users for their patience while we carry out these essential upgrades.”
The project forms part of the Pipes for Perth Program, which will replace 150 kilometres of original cast iron water mains by the end of 2018.
The Pipes for Perth Program will also replace water mains along two residential roads in Subiaco later this month. Work will be undertaken along Subiaco Road, between Coghlan Road and Thomas Street, and Coghlan Road, between Subiaco Road and Bagot Road. The projects are expected to be completed in August 2017.
Planning is also under way on projects to replace water mains in Wembley, West Leederville and Cottesloe from May 2017, with planned completion in September 2017.
