Part of $12.5m program to install 2,900 extra hydrants across Western Australia
Fifteen suburbs in the Goldfields will benefit from the Liberal National Government's $12.5 million program to install extra fire hydrants across Western Australia.
Water Minister Mia Davies said Boulder, Broadwood, Hannans, Kalgoorlie, Karlkurla, Lamington, Mullingar, Piccadilly, Somerville, South Boulder, South Kalgoorlie, Victory Heights, West Kalgoorlie, West Lamington and Yilkari would receive an additional 213 fire hydrants.
"The Water Corporation started work earlier this month to install the new fire hydrants in these suburbs," Ms Davies said.
"About 1,690 new fire hydrants have been installed since the program began in 2015, in both metropolitan and regional areas."
Following a review of the 70,000 fire hydrants across the State, the Water Corporation and Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) identified additional fire hydrants were needed.
The Water Corporation has consulted DFES, Main Roads WA and local government authorities to determine locations for the new fire hydrants.
"Advice from these agencies is crucial to ensure the new hydrants are installed in the best possible locations," the Minister said.
Ms Davies reminded people living in high bushfire risk areas that they should still have an independent water supply if they chose to stay and actively defend their home during a bushfire.
"While the Water Corporation will do all it can to maintain scheme water during a bushfire, damaged infrastructure or a cut to power may result in a total loss of public water supplies," she said.
