Upper Swan River wastewater overflow in Guildford and Viveash area
Avoid all water recreational activities in the Upper Swan River. This includes swimming, wading, fishing, crabbing, skiing, kayaking, and rowing until further notice. This is due to wastewater overflows into the river.
The affected part of the river goes from Guildford Road Bridge, which is between Bassendean and Guildford, to Reg Bond Reserve in Viveash.

Last night, 3 July, crews repairing a burst wastewater main in Caversham ran into technical issues. As a result, wastewater backed up in the network, causing three overflows into the river. However, the sewer main is now repaired and wastewater overflows have stopped.
Stay away from all affected water in the area. This means avoiding nearby wetlands, drains, and creeks. Also, be sure to follow any warning signs. The public health advisory is expected to remain in place for several days, or until further notice.
In the event of contact with any residual wastewater, wash hands thoroughly with soap and clean water and disinfect any surfaces exposed to wastewater. You can find more information on wastewater and health risks by visiting the Healthy WA website.
Temporary odour may be experienced in the vicinity of the affected area. To minimise odours, please keep windows closed and consider using fans or air purifiers if needed. Avoid exercising outdoors if strong odours are present.
If you feel unwell and experience symptoms such as headaches, fatigue and nausea, phone HealthDirect on 1800 022 222 or seek medical advice.
