Water Corporation brings a splash of colour and conservation to Peel neighbourhood

A once-unassuming wastewater pump station in North Yunderup has been revitalised into a vivid public mural through Water Corporation’s Splash of Colour program.
Located at Kingfisher Park near the Murray River, the pump station now bursts with images of local birdlife, including a red-capped parrot, red-tailed black cockatoo, and New Holland honeyeater - an artwork made even more special by the hands and ideas of local students.
Created by artist Vanessa Liebenberg in collaboration with Year 6 students from Austin Cove Baptist College in South Yunderup, the mural incorporates student-designed patterns inspired by native flora.
Several of the student’s patterns were integrated into the final piece, ensuring the artwork is a true reflection of the creativity and connection to the local community.
Water Corporation General Manager Customer and Community Karen Willis said the project was a perfect example of how art and education can come together to create something meaningful.
“Water Corporation’s Splash of Colour program is not just about beautifying infrastructure - it’s about fostering a connection between people, place, and the essential role water plays in everyone’s lives,” said Ms Willis.
“By involving local students in the design process, this mural is not only a striking piece of art but also a learning opportunity, inspiring young minds to appreciate the significance of water and conservation efforts specific to their local area.”
The workshop with students also offered an interactive lesson on the water cycle and the importance of sustainable water use - lessons brought to life through creativity and collaboration.
“With more than 85 assets now transformed across Western Australia, Splash of Colour continues to enhance public spaces while celebrating water sustainability and conservation,” Ms Willis added.
Since its launch in 2017, the Splash of Colour program has helped transform more than 85 water and wastewater assets across Western Australia. Each artwork is a unique celebration of local identity and the community’s relationship with water.
The initiative supports the WA Government’s Kep Katitjin–Gabi Kaadadjan (Waterwise Action Plan 3), which aims to establish leading waterwise communities in Boorloo (Perth) and Bindjareb (Peel) by 2030.
