Follow the steps below to turn off the water supply to your property:

Step 1. Find the water mains tap on your property

The water mains tap (or shutoff valve) can be found near your water meter, which is typically located near your verge or along the outside of your property.

If you’re having trouble finding your meter, try using our search tool to check its location.

Depending on your property, the shutoff valve can look different – you can see the most common types below.

A standard water meter with a t-head tap

A standard water meter with a quarter-turn water mains tap

A meter with a quarter-turn mains tap.

Step 2. Turn the tap to the close position (clockwise)

If you can’t close the tap, try turning it anticlockwise first to break the seal and then back clockwise to the close position.
