Key initiatives

Water-saving features introduced during redevelopment:

  • Push-button showers with regulated flow rates to prevent excessive water usage
  • Flow-controlled hand basins designed only to deliver the necessary volume of water
  • Waterless urinals to significantly reduce overall water consumption at the facility

Real-time leak detection and repairs:

  • The installation of a smart water metre ensures weekly electronic notifications of water usage trends. The smart meter system analyses water consumption to previous periods, providing instant leak detection alerts that allow for immediate action.
  • Ten electronic sub-meters provide detailed water consumption data across different areas of the facility. This information is presented on a real-time dashboard the City of Mandurah developed in-house, enabling centre management to analyse water usage patterns alongside visitor attendance.

Proactive maintenance and staff training:

  • Daily inspections throughout the facility to identify and report leaks, and malfunctioning fixtures. Swift repairs ensure that water wastage is minimised.
  • The necessary operational activity of pool backwashing Pool backwashing is only conducted when pressure readings indicate that it is required, avoiding unnecessary water use.
  • Waterwise ‘Water Auditing’ training has been undertaken by facility leadership to deepen their expertise in managing water efficiently.

Waterwise fixtures and educating patrons:

  • Push-button showers and taps with set durations ensure water is used responsibly in changerooms.
  • Dual-flush toilets and waterless urinals continue to serve as essential tools in reducing water consumption. Remaining single flush toilets were replaced with 6/3L or 4.5/3L dual flush models, significantly reducing water use.
  • Educational posters and stickers installed in changerooms and public areas encourage patrons to be mindful of their water use, fostering a culture of conservation within the community.

Waterwise landscaping:

  • Native plants and mulch are used in garden beds to reduce water use and enhance the sustainability of landscaping.

What's next

MARC is committed to furthering its efforts in sustainable water use and efficiency. The centre aims to secure funding for additional sub-metering, enabling more precise water monitoring and management. MARC also remains dedicated to upholding its strong water efficiency practices while fostering a culture of conservation by educating both patrons and staff on the vital role they play in preserving this  valuable resource. Through these ongoing initiatives, MARC hopes to inspire lasting change within its community.
