A small, sprawling herbaceous plant usually no more than 30 cm high but often spreading much wider due to its suckering habit. Small, dull green leaves and massed, blue flowers in winter and spring. There is considerable variation within the species. Cultivars include 'Cobalt Mound', 'Royal Purple', 'True Blue', 'Ultra Violet' and 'Violet Princess'.
