Supporting meaningful opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is central to how we continue to grow as an organisation. By building a culturally safe workplace that reflects the diverse communities that we serve, we can support purposeful career pathways and deepen our cultural capability and awareness. This helps us foster a more informed, respectful and inclusive workplace.

From trainee to leader: Steve’s journey in the Goldfields

One of the many employees who have grown their career with us is Steve. He began his career more than a decade ago as a trainee operator with the Kalgoorlie Civil Team. Step by step, role by role, and with guidance from leaders and the AED team, Steve’s built a career that kept him close to Country while opening new career pathways.

His career journey included stepping into several operational and leadership roles including Senior Operator, Civil Team Leader and Trades Team Leader, before more recently being appointed Operations Manager for the Goldfields – Kalgoorlie.

His strong connection to Country and deep understanding of the region helps shape decisions that support both local teams and the customers who rely on our services every day.

“My role involves engaging with teams, managing our work across the region and staying connected with people on the ground,” Steve said. “I’m proud to be part of a team where flexibility, work-life balance and a family-friendly culture support both professional growth and personal well-being.”

His journey shows how culturally safe and supportive environments help Aboriginal team members build meaningful, long-term careers and how this experience strengthens the service we provide to Western Australians.

How we support Aboriginal career development

We understand that connection to Country for Aboriginal people is a source of strength, identity, and wellbeing. To help Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people maintain their cultural connections and obligations while thriving in their careers, we have dedicated support through our Aboriginal Employment and Development (AED) team.

The AED team support Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander employees through their career journey, providing assistance with job applications and interview preparation, career development advice, and connection to social support networks.

Delvene from the AED team shares, “The AED team aims to boost attraction, inclusion and career growth through tailored support that builds confidence and capability across the business. In turn this creates stronger relationships with our communities across the state.”

Aboriginal career pathways bring stronger capability

When Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees thrive, so does the work we do across Western Australia. Stronger cultural understanding leads to:

  • Deeper community trust
  • More culturally informed decisions
  • More responsive service

It’s simple — investing in people leads to better outcomes for everyone.
