In the Great Southern Region, where wide paddocks meet wastewater treatment sites, you’ll find Todd. He’s one of our Operators, working quietly behind the scenes to keep our Wastewater Resource Recovery Facilities running well. But Todd’s work goes beyond daily operations, he’s helping us find smarter, more sustainable ways to care for the environment.

Finding better ways through data

Since joining Water Corporation nearly three years ago, Todd has played a key role in a project that’s helping us better understand greenhouse gas emissions from regional ponds. His work has helped create a new dataset that will support how we measure Scope 1 emissions. A big step toward our goal of Net Zero by 2035.

Did you know?

Our Water Resource Recovery Facilities (WRRFs) use live microorganisms, often called "bugs" to naturally break down organic matter. A large portion of the recovered water is then reused to irrigate tree farms and maintain sporting grounds, helping support greener communities.

“We collected samples throughout the day for a year,” said Todd, who’s based in the Great Southern. “The key was being consistent. That way, the only thing changing was the weather and that gave us more accurate data.”

Now that the sampling is done, Todd is excited to see what the data reveals.

“It’ll be interesting to compare places like Albany and Port Hedland. I’m curious to see how temperature affects gas levels like methane. The more data we have, the better decisions we can make for the future.”

A love for the outdoors and a passion for sustainability

Todd’s love for the outdoors started early. He grew up on a farm and still feels most at home under the open sky.

“Being outside is awesome. That’s where I’m happiest.”

His role lets him combine that love with a strong sense of purpose. Each day, he visits different water resource recovery sites to run tests, make adjustments and help improve how we manage wastewater.

“I like how we’re using more renewable energy and how, in my role with wastewater, we can reuse parts that previously would’ve just been thrown away. In places like Denmark, we turn biosolids into compost and use it on farms. That’s pretty cool.”

From wastewater to community wellbeing

When he’s not working, Todd’s usually at home on his 10-acre block with his cows, dogs and a few long-running projects that keep him busy.

“I’ve got six cows, three dogs, and a 1984 Landcruiser I’ve been restoring. My wife and I took the Landscruiser to Tasmania and back in 2018 for two months for a holiday with no air con, no power steering, just the open road. It was fantastic”

He’s also deeply involved in his local community, from firefighting to football.

“If I volunteer, I want to give it my all. I’m with the local fire brigade now, but I’ve also been President of the Albany Soccer Association and Vice-Captain of the golf club.”

Todd’s journey reminds us that meaningful change often starts with simple actions., A curious mind, and a deep care for the land and people around us.
