Wellington Dam construction

  • Replacement Wellington Dam bridge underway, expected to be built by mid-2026
  • Dual-lane vehicle access will support increased visitor numbers with enhanced views of dam’s famous mega-mural

Construction has commenced on a new bridge at Wellington Dam, near Collie, which will enable a significant increase in visitor numbers and boost regional tourism.

Replacing the original single-lane bridge, which dated back to 1966, Water Corporation’s contractor Seymour Whyte is building a new dual-lane traffic bridge featuring a pedestrian walkway.

This additional capacity will permit larger buses and coaches, supporting increased visitation, and a relocated walkway will afford unobstructed views of Guido van Helten’s photorealistic artwork ‘Reflections’, the world’s largest dam mural.

The new bridge is expected to be unveiled in mid-2026 and, in the interim, the Falcon Road crossing at Wellington Dam remains closed to both vehicles and pedestrians.

Water Corporation Acting General Manager Assets Planning and Delivery Nathan Hardwick said the replacement bridge will be a significant upgrade to benefit the area for decades to come.

“The original bridge from 1966 only had a single lane and was built decades before the Wellington Dam mural was conceived,” Mr Hardwick said.

“By permitting large passenger vehicles, the new bridge will make the mural more accessible, whether as a pedestrian or from the comfort of a coach.

“During construction, all other facilities at Wellington Dam remain open, so visitors can still enjoy an excellent view of the mural while enjoying a BBQ lunch or bite to eat at the café.”

The Wellington Dam bridge project is supported by the State Government.
