A pop up sprinkler watering lawn

Households in Perth and Peel are urged to switch off their sprinklers tonight ahead of the heavy rainfall forecast in coming days.

With the South-West region expecting 100 millimetres or more of rain from Tropical Cyclone Narelle, Water Corporation is estimating more than 500 million litres of water could be saved by turning off pre-programmed garden reticulation.

Demand Delivery Manager Damien Postma said the forecast downpour would provide enough moisture to sustain lawns and gardens for several days.

“Gardens make up 30-40 percent of household water use, and opportunities to achieve significant water savings outside winter are increasingly rare, so this weekend really matters,” said Mr Postma.

“It’s simply unnecessary to leave the retic running, with up to 100 millimetres of rain forecast. As it’s expected to pour for four days straight, most households could skip both sprinkler days this week.

“Make the most of the rain by moving potted plants out from under patios or eaves so they get a good drink too.

“You can also help your garden soak up the rainfall, by applying a wetting agent to your soil in coming days.”
