Showers account for 24% of household water use, making them one of the easiest areas to reduce water consumption at home.
Saving water in the shower
Quick tips
- Keep showers to four minutes or less
- Switch to a water efficient WELS rated showerhead
- Brush your teeth at the sink, not in the shower
- Turn the water off when soaping or shaving
Keep showers to four minutes or less
In WA, the average shower lasts over six minutes. To help us save every drop of water, showers should be kept to four minutes or less.
Wondering if cutting a couple of minutes off your shower really helps? The answer is yes! If everyone reduces their shower time by just one minute we would save 12 billion litres of water each year, that's enough to fill Optus Stadium 12 times!
Keep track of time in the shower
Try using a shower timer or pick your favourite four-minute song from our Spotify playlist to put on when you shower.
Don't forget that when the music stops, so should the water!
Brush your teeth at the sink, not in the shower
Brushing your teeth in the shower might seem convenient, but it can waste up to 9L of water every minute. That’s a lot of water for a task that only takes a few seconds at the sink. Be waterwise by following these simple steps:
- Wet your toothbrush at the sink
- Brush your teeth
- Rinse
Use a bucket to save extra water
Instead of letting cold water go down the drain while waiting for it to heat up, collect it in a bucket to water your plants with. You could be catching 9L for every minute you’re not in the shower.

Consider a bath instead
It’s easy to assume that baths use more water than showers, but that's not always true. If done correctly, a bath can actually use less water than showering. It all depends on:
- The size of your tub
- How much you fill your tub
- How efficient your showerhead is and how long you shower for
Tips for a waterwise bath:
- Don't overfill the tub: There's no need to overfill your the tub, use only as much water as you need
- Watch the temperature: Avoid topping up with hot water repeatedly, it leads to a fuller tub and more wasted water
- Consider reusing bathwater: If you're using eco-friendly soaps, consider using leftover bathwater to water your garden or even wash the car.
Choose water efficient fittings
Choose WELS rated taps and showerheads in the bathroom, or install flow-controlled aerators. To help with the installation, contact a Waterwise Plumber.
The type of showerhead you use can have a big impact on your household’s water usage. A simple switch to a water efficient model can save up to 20,000L of water per year - that’s enough to fill a small backyard pool!
What to look for while you're shopping for a showerhead:
- Check the WELS label: The Water Efficiency Labelling Scheme (WELS) rates products from 0 to 6 stars. The more stars, the more water-efficient the showerhead.
- Look at the flow rate: A water-efficient showerhead uses 9L or less per minute. Some older models use up to 20L/min, which is more than double!
