Waterwise Office Program

It’s easy to apply fresh water thinking in your office building when you join this free program.

We've partnered with the Property Council of Australia and City of Perth to develop the Waterwise Office Program to support Perth's commercial office sector reduce their water use. The program provides water use performance indicators so that you can assess whether your building is water efficient and identify opportunities for improvement. The program is free and easy to join, so give your business a leading edge by signing up to be Waterwise!

The program provides a guide to water efficiency benchmark for businesses that have not invested in a National Australian Built Environment Rating System (NABERS) Water Rating and differentiates between water use in an air-cooled and water-cooled building.

Case studies show that benchmarking water usage and planning for improvement can reduce operating costs including sewerage charges and costs associated with heating, pumping and treating water.

Other key benefits are:

  • WA performance indicators to measure water use against others in your industry
  • recognition by Water Corporation, Property Council of Australia and City of Perth as a leader in efficient water use
  • access to the Waterwise logo
  • potential for improved sustainability ratings and reduced operational costs through improved efficiency and water savings
  • access to tools, such as data loggers, resources and networks that support and enable improvements in water use
  • competitive edge when promoting your business as a sustainable place to work.

To be eligible to join the program your office building must have a net lettable area (NLA) greater than 5,000m2 and the building owner or owner’s representative must commit to:

To be endorsed as a Waterwise Office the building owner must also demonstrate water use performance is equal to or above the industry baseline:

  • 0.86kL/m2NLA/year for a water-cooled building
  • 0.71kL/m2NLA/year for an air-cooled building.

Every two years the industry baseline is reviewed to ensure best practice water use within Waterwise Offices.

The industry baseline was determined by a review of water use and Net Lettable Area (NLA) larger than 5000m2 in 82 office buildings within the Perth, East Perth and West Perth CBD by HFM Asset Management on our behalf and Property Council of Australia.

The results of this review are used to determine the recognition categories for water-cooled and air-cooled buildings.

The report highlights significant improvement in water efficiency over the past five years with a decrease of 254 billion litres in water consumption across Perth offices more than 5000m2. The Waterwise Office Program is considered to have made a significant contribution to this behavioural change.

* This information is provided as a guide only.

** To be eligible to receive Gold or Platinum levels of recognition a current NABERS Water Rating is required. This allows us to independently validate the results of high performing buildings before they are recognised as such.

To find out if you are already eligible for recognition you need to determine if your water use performance is equal to or exceeding the industry baseline shown above.

Calculate your water use performance

You need to know the NLA of the building and annual water consumption, which is found on your water bills.

You can then divide your annual water use by your NLA to give your performance in kilolitres per square metre per year.

Make sure you don’t include water use from other facilities such as food or retail outlets in your calculations.
