Water quality in the communities of Cue, Sandstone, Meekatharra and Mount Magnet is set to improve, with Water Corporation to invest around $16 million over the next three years to install advanced water treatment plants in each town.

Water Corporation Mid West Regional Manager Steve Greeve said he was pleased to announce these towns will receive advanced water treatment plants to improve water quality for the community.

“The first town to receive the water treatment plant will be Cue, with construction expected to begin in April 2018. The new plants will also be installed in Sandstone, Meekatharra and Mount Magnet over the next three years,” Mr Greeve said.

Water Corporation has been working with the Cue community over the past year to trial in-house treatment units to improve aesthetic water quality.

“While the trial did partly succeed, the decision has been made to install a centralised treatment solution to improve the town’s water before it is supplied to customers,” Mr Greeve said.

“I thank the trial participants in the Cue community for working with the Water Corporation on the trial of in-house treatment. Your assistance has helped identify the best solution to improve water quality in your town.”

Water Corporation’s project team recently met with stakeholders and trial participants in Cue, with news of the new water treatment plants to be installed received positively.

Cue, Meekatharra, Mount Magnet and Sandstone have naturally occurring underlying rock conditions that affect the quality of drinking water sourced from local bores.

The advanced water treatment, known as Electro Dialysis Reversal plants, reduce the naturally high levels of salinity and nitrates that occur in groundwater across the Murchison and will improve aesthetic characteristics such as scaling and hardness.
