Esperance water
Esperance relies almost entirely on a single groundwater source, so protecting it is critical to the community's future.
This groundwater supports the town's drinking water supply, as well as public open space irrigation, industry, stock watering and rural residential properties.
Groundwater monitoring shows groundwater levels are declining, and salinity levels are increasing, placing increasing pressure on this valuable shared resource.
While we continue to investigate future water supply options for Esperance, action is needed now to help protect local groundwater resources and support the town's long-term water security.
The WA Government is working to reduce pressure on the groundwater system and help ensure Esperance has a secure and sustainable water future.

What's changing?
New watering arrangements for domestic bore users
From 1 December 2026, a two-day per week sprinkler roster for domestic bores will commence for the whole of Esperance Shire, plus the locality of Munglinup.
This change aligns with the existing two-day per week watering days arrangements which are already in place for scheme water customers, who will not be impacted by this change.
Sprinkler Switch Off
From 1 June 2027, a Sprinkler Switch Off will be introduced across the whole Esperance Shire, plus the locality of Munglinup.
This means sprinklers must not be used during June, July and August, when rainfall is typically higher and less outdoor watering is needed.
Why are the domestic bore watering changes being introduced?
The new domestic bore watering arrangements are designed to help reduce pressure on local groundwater resources and support Esperance's long-term water security.
