Alkimos Wastewater Treatment Plant upgrade
Project goal:
The Alkimos Wastewater Treatment Plant will be upgraded to increase its capacity to 26 million litres a day. The upgrade is necessary to support increased population growth in the local area.
Status:
In planning
Delivery date:
Construction is planned to begin in late-2024, with the work expected to be finished by 2026.
What's happening?
The Alkimos Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) was commissioned in 2011.The plant is located at the Alkimos Water Precinct, which is accessed from a dedicated road off Marmion Avenue.
This is the first upgrade to be undertaken since plant commissioning. With population growth and an increased flow into the plant from surrounding suburbs, an upgrade is needed to support future growth. This upgrade involves mechanical and electrical improvements to existing infrastructure at the site.
When is this happening?
Pending approvals, the upgrade is planned to commence in late-2024 is estimated to take 12 months to complete.
How will this impact me?
The plant will continue to treat wastewater throughout the upgrade period and wastewater services to local homes and businesses will not be affected by the work. The plant is about 600 metres from the nearest home, separated by high and dense dunes, which play an important role is buffering the community from noise and odour from the plant.
