Perth smart water meter program
When it comes to managing your water, every drop counts. So, we're harnessing the power of data through smart meter technology to help customers understand and manage their water use and provide important insights to save our valuable resource.
The Perth smart water meter program will shape Western Australia's water future and help improve our services while we work towards a more sustainable future.
Program goal:
The outcomes of the program will help us understand the benefits of smart meter technology in developing new and innovative services for our customers to identify leaks and reduce water usage and utilise better data to improve how we operate our business.
Status:
In progress
Delivery Date:
2023 - 2026
What is happening?
Up to 16,000 properties across Perth will have a smart meter installed to assess the benefits of the technology.
Households with a smart meter installed will have greater access to their daily water use in their Online Account. This includes insights on hourly water usage, possible leaks, peak water use periods and more. Customers will also be able to register for Leak & Water Use Alerts to be notified much sooner of leaks or higher than usual water use.
We will seek feedback from customers about these new online features which will help us understand what the future of smart meters will look like for both our customers and our business.
Valuable insights about your household water use
About 30% of Perth homes have a water leak each year and if the leak remains hidden, it could mean a big water bill. Smart meters can help you catch leaks before they become big problems.
Your smart meter measures your water usage in hourly intervals, so you can access richer water use data for your household. This data is sent to us daily and appears in your online account the following day.
You can view your water use by day, week, month or year, compare across seasons and set custom date ranges to spot patterns over time. These insights can help you understand your habits and make small changes that could lower your water bill.
Log in to your online account to see your water use insights. While you’re there, you can also sign up for Leak & Water Use Alerts to get notified about possible leaks or higher water use. If you don’t have an online account, register to gain access.
Why smart meters?
We have been using smart meters for over 10 years in areas where it can be difficult for our meter readers to access properties safely.
With new technology now available, smart meters can improve the safety, reliability, and efficiency of meter readings while providing our customers with a better online service.
Smart water meters also have a range of benefits like identifying potential leaks, which can help you save water and money.

Specific water zones have been selected for the program to enable us to assess the performance of the technology. This includes properties in the hills and on the coast, businesses and households, and properties with meters located in boxes or behind fences.
The properties we’ve selected are also representative of the broader Perth population so we can assess the value of smart meter technology for our customers.
We will need to turn the water off at your property for 10-15 minutes during the replacement.
If your water is turned off, you may notice a loud bang and your water bubbling as it comes out of the tap when it's turned back on. This is due to the air entering your water pipe during the replacement. It should only take a moment for the air to clear and your water supply to return to normal. You can learn more about what to expect when your water is back on.
Your smart meter measures your water use in hourly intervals and automatically sends this data back to us each day. Your water use data is available within the ‘My water use’ tab in your online account the following day (24 hours later), allowing you to track your water use in close to real time. Smart meter technology enables us to detect possible leaks, or unusual or higher than normal water use. If you have signed up to Leak & Water Use Alerts we can send you an SMS or email alert to let you know. It means you can take action sooner to investigate any water loss and avoid a higher bill.
To sign up, log in to your online account and follow the prompts in the ‘My water use’ section.
We don't offer appointments as part of the first round of meter replacements.
On our first visit to your area, we'll attempt to upgrade every property's meter. If we're unable to safely access your meter due to a locked gate, dog, or other obstruction, your property will be moved to our second round of meter replacements.
We'll then contact you about removing the obstruction and booking an appointment for us to visit your property again and upgrade your meter.
If we're unable to safely access your meter to complete the upgrade during the first round of meter replacements, your meter will be marked as obstructed and moved into the second round.
Prior to the second round, we'll notify you that your meter is obstructed and what action you'll need to take to clear the obstruction.
Please note that as the property owner and/or occupier, you are responsible under section 24 (1) of the Water Services Regulations 2013 for ensuring your water meter is clear and safe to access.
If you don't clear the obstruction or make an appointment for us to complete your meter upgrade, you may be issued with an infringement.
The smart water meters use secure, existing telecommunication infrastructure to send your water usage data to our servers and systems.
The data doesn’t contain any identifying information about you and we use global standards to ensure the data is secure from end to end.
No personal information is stored on the device itself. We know privacy is important to you; for more information, please read about how we manage your information following the Privacy Act 1988.
