Project goal:

To replace the Wellington Dam Road Bridge.

Status:

In construction.

Delivery Date:

Mid-2026

What’s happening?

Water Corporation has commenced work to replace the Wellington Dam Road bridge with a new, dual lane bridge and pedestrian footpath. This work will improve safety and access for visitors to the dam, and will be delivered by Water Corporation’s authorised contractor, Seymour Whyte. The Wellington Dam Road Bridge upgrade project is supported by the State Government.

To prepare for the safe replacement of the existing bridge, some brief, temporary closures of the surrounding site are necessary in June and July 2025. Please see further information regarding the timing of these closures below. Following demolition of the existing bridge, construction of the new bridge will commence.

The existing bridge at the foot of the Wellington Dam mural on Falcon Road will remain closed to vehicles and pedestrians. Traffic management is in place to advise of detours.

Visitors are still welcome to access the Wellington Dam tourist site and view the mega mural. We encourage all visitors to view the mega mural at the designated viewing platforms, accessed via Wellington Dam Road.

Visitors can walk over the top of the dam between 9am – 5pm. The Kiosk at the Dam and The Quarry remain open.

Temporary Closures

To prepare for the safe replacement of the bridge, some low-level blasting activities will take place. To ensure public safety, some brief, temporary closures of the surrounding area are necessary.

From Thursday 5 June to Sunday 15 July 2025, low-level blasting is scheduled to occur on weekdays (Monday to Friday only) between 12pm-2pm. During this time, access to the Quarry, viewing platform (lookout), and dam wall walk will be temporarily closed.

These areas will reopen outside of blasting hours. The Kiosk and nearby toilet facilities will remain accessible during this time.

Key Information:
  • When: Thursday 5 June to Sunday 15 July 2025 on weekdays (Monday to Friday only)
  • Time: Daily between 12pm and 2pm on weekdays (weather permitting)
  • Areas Closed during this time:
    - Quarry access
    - Viewing platforms (lookout)
    - Dam wall walk
  • Areas remaining open:
    - The Kiosk
    - Toilet facilities near the Kiosk
Please note:
  • Blasting is weather-dependent and may not occur every day within this period.
  • Outside of the 12pm-2pm window, access to the designated viewing platforms, the Quarry and the Dam wall walk will be accessible as usual.
  • Clear signage and staff will be on site to ensure public safety during this period.

We apologise for any inconvenience and appreciate your patience and understanding as we carry out this essential work.

Why is this happening?

The single lane Wellington Dam Road bridge was built in 1966. In February 2021, the Wellington Dam mega mural was completed, drawing more traffic to the bridge. Engineering reviews found the bridge to be unfit for its load limit and was closed to pedestrians and vehicles in May 2021 to ensure public safety.

When is it happening?

Work is currently underway, with demolition of the old bridge planned to start from mid-2025. As part of this work, some brief, temporary closures of the surrounding site are required.

Following demolition of the existing bridge, construction of the new bridge will commence, with completion expected by mid-2026.

Can I complete the Bibbulmun Track and Wiilman Bilya Trail?

Walkers looking to complete the full circuit of the Wiilman Bilya trail can currently use the newly opened walkway over the top of Wellington Dam.

The Bibbulmun Wellington spur trail can also currently be reached by walking across the top of the dam from the Kiosk.

Visitors can walk across the dam between 9am-5pm every day. Please visit the DBCA website for updated information on walkway opening times.
