Margaret River Lantana Lane upgrade

What’s happening?

To maintain a reliable wastewater service in Margaret River, we upgrading the wastewater infrastructure connected to the Lantana Lane Wastewater Pump Station in Riverslea. 

This upgrade includes the construction of a new 2.6km pipeline that will flow directly to Margaret River Water Resource Recovery Facility, where 100% of wastewater is treated and reused locally.

The pipeline will be installed underground using a mix of open trench and trenchless construction methods to minimise above ground disturbance and impacts to the river and surrounding vegetation. 

Where is this happening?

The new pipeline will start at the Lantana Lane Wastewater Pump Station, travel along Riverslea Drive, pass beneath the river, and then continue along Perimeter Road to connect to the Water Resource Recovery Facility. Most work will take place in reserves, along roads or within verges.

The pipeline will be installed underground using a mix of open trench and trenchless construction methods to minimise above ground disturbance and impacts to the river and surrounding vegetation. 

When is the work taking place?

The majority of the work in residential streets will take place between August and December 2026, with the overall project scheduled for completion by April 2027. Additional upgrade work will take place at the Lantana Lane Pump Station at various stages throughout the project.

Work in residential areas will generally occur Monday to Friday between 7am and 6pm, however, occasional weekend work may be required to complete critical activities. 

How will this impact me?

Water Corporation and our contractors will work to minimise impacts where possible and thank you for your patience while this important upgrade is completed.

Traffic and access impacts

Temporary road closures, lane restrictions, and pedestrian and traffic detours will be required at various stages of the project to enable work to be carried out safely. All work areas will be securely fenced. Current expected traffic and access changes are outlined below and may be updated as works progress. Please follow all signage and speak with onsite crews if you have any questions or concerns.

Stage 1: River crossing at Riverslea Drive and Bankside Retreat | August – September 2026

• Temporary road closure on Riverslea Drive near Bankside Retreat.
• Access to Riverslea Drive and Bushland Rise maintained via a detour through Highland View.
• Access to Bankside Retreat maintained via single-lane traffic arrangements.

Stage 2: Pipeline installation along Riverslea Drive | September – December 2026

• Rolling single-lane closures along Riverslea Drive as construction progresses.
• Access to Riverslea Drive and the Riverslea Run Trail from Thomas Reserve maintained via Halcyon Crescent.

Stage 3: Perimeter Road construction and pump station upgrades | November 2026 – April 2027

• Perimeter Road will remain open, with temporary traffic management in place on sections of the road while works are undertaken within the road reserve.
• Access to Riverslea Drive and the Riverslea Run Trail from Thomas Reserve maintained via Halcyon Crescent.

Construction impacts

The pipeline will be constructed below ground, mostly within road reserves and verges. Installation will be carried out using a combination of trenching and trenchless construction methods. We do not expect to trench within residential properties. During construction, you may notice increased activity in the area, including workers, trucks and machinery. Some activities, particularly trenchless drilling works, will generate periods of noise and vibration during approved working hours. We will work to keep these impacts to a minimum wherever possible.

Some temporary impacts to roads, verges and public open space are unavoidable. Any areas impacted by the work will be restored as close as possible to their original condition. We will work closely with the Shire of Augusta Margaret River throughout the project to ensure reinstatement works meet agreed standards.

Environmental considerations

We are using specialist drilling methods to minimise impacts on the river, surrounding vegetation and significant trees. We have worked closely with environmental specialists, regulatory agencies, the Shire of Augusta Margaret River, the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, the Forest Products Commission and Water Corporation's environmental team to minimise impacts during construction and ensure disturbed areas are appropriately reinstated.
