Camourflage Hakea,Two Leaf Hakea

Family: PROTEACEAE
Genus: Hakea
Species: trifurcata
view favourites

Wiry shrub with cream cluster flowers from winter to spring. Unusual feature of 2 distinct leaf shapes on the one plant. This is thought to confuse seed eating birds such as the Carnaby's Cockatoo as these broad leaves resembled fruits. Essentially the broad leaves presented an unrewarding experience to seed eaters which move elsewhere to eat.

Pronunciation: Hay-kee-ah

Warning: A few plants in the Protea family can be damaged by phosphorous (P). Exercise caution when applying fertiliser. Caution may cause skin irritation.
