A large, evergreen shrub from Eastern Australia and New Zealand growing up to 4 metres high and 3 metres wide. It has large, upright leaves with a purple underside and insignificant flowers followed by decorative, persistent, green, hop-like fruits. Plants closely related to this one are known to be weeds in other parts of Australia.

Also commonly known as Varnish Leaf and Purple Akeake.
