The Capel community will have the opportunity to save water this spring and summer, with Water Corporation set to launch a new waterwise program in the South West town.

Water Corporation South West Regional Manager, John Janssen, said around 900 households would be invited to take part in the new program.

“Our new water saving program is designed to provide households with information about their water use through a series of personalised letters, to help them identify when they can save water,” Mr Janssen said.

“By receiving updates every two months, households can view the results of their water saving efforts – with small changes having a big impact on water use.

“We will also be offering free waterwise products, including showerheads for the community. By switching to a water efficient showerhead households can save up to 20,000 litres of water per year.

“We will also offer a free waterwise gardening event in November, to provide details on how to have a beautiful, water efficient garden suited to Capel’s climate.”

Selected local businesses will also be invited to take part in the program to join the community’s efforts to save water.

Mr Janssen said working with the community to reduce water use formed part of the Water Corporation's long-term Water Forever: South West plan to secure water supplies in response to climate change.

“This new program in Capel follows on from a series of successful programs in Eaton, Australind, Dalyellup and the Warren-Blackwood region,” Mr Janssen said.

“Over a six-month period, a total of 14,661 households took part in the water saving programs and used an estimated 251 million litres less than the same time the year before. That’s enough water to fill 111 Olympic-sized swimming pools and is a great achievement by those communities.”

Water Corporation will begin to contact households and eligible businesses in Capel next week, to outline the water saving program, which will run until May 2018. For more information visit Water Corporation’s website watercorporation.com.au/community
