A fast-growing, evergreen shrub to 3 metres high and 2.5 metres wide. Dense, dark green, leathery foliage. In winter, clusters of creamy white, perfumed flowers open from pink buds, which are often followed by small, purple-black berries. Responds well to regular pruning. A very popular plant, often used for hedging.

Cultivars include 'Anvi' (to 4 m, slightly larger flowers), 'Emerald Beauty' (dense foliage, pink buds) and 'Variegated' (variegated leaves).
