Locals visiting Dunsborough Bay Yacht Club or walking along Wilson Avenue in Quindalup may notice bright new additions with two sets of Water Corporation grey electrical cabinets transformed into public art.

Through Water Corporation’s Splash of Colour Community Art program, everyday electrical cabinets and pump stations across the State are transformed into meaningful community art reflective of the local area and the community's connection to water.

Local artist Sam Allen, who was enlisted by the City of Busselton, painted an echidna in its natural habitat on the two grey cabinets on Wilson Avenue. The set of electrical cabinets in front of the yacht club on Geographe Bay Road now showcase a gigantic whale diving below a sailing ship.

Water Corporation South West Regional Manager John Janssen said the Splash of Colour program aimed to create community identity and enhance the liveability and vibrancy of local neighbourhoods.

“It’s great to see functional and highly visible assets transformed into both striking and meaningful pieces of public art for the whole community to enjoy,” Mr Janssen said.

“I am pleased Sam incorporated a whale into the design as a giant whale bone that could be thousands of years old was discovered close to the yacht club earlier this year,” he said.

Home-grown artist Sam Allen said he was excited to be involved in Water Corporation’s Splash of Colour program.

“I really enjoyed bringing my creative concepts to life through paint and I hope my artwork, which very much reflects the local surrounds, brightens the day of everyone who sees them,” he said.

“I really wanted to capture some of the colours of the backdrop and bring them forward to the roadside, and having only just recently realised that echidnas reside in the area, I wanted to paint a larger version – all this time I had no idea that they lived in the south-west, so if anything, I got a little educated.”
